I dropped off the knife and burgers at the Corntree Site in the evening. The response from my previous visits had been so immediate that I made a big show of placing the gift items. I took one of the burgers out and folded back the wrap and took a bite, then held it up in case someone was watching. I folded the wrapper back over the burger and put it back in the sack with the other. I then pierced the sack on a limb about seven feet off of the ground placed the recorder and left. I checked the next morning and the gift was untouched but the wind overnight had blown the sack down. I retrieved the recorder and left the sack on a lower branch and left. The wind had dominated the recording, so I decided to try again. The burgers and knife were still untouched, although the burger sack was back on the ground. I folded the top closed and decided to leave it on the ground about 3 feet from the recorder. When I returned the next day the hamburger sack had been ripped open across the bottom of the sack. No teeth or claw punctures were evident. The untouched burger had been removed from the sack and was on the ground about three feet away. Again the paper wrap was torn but showed no tooth or claw marks. The bun top was MIA the bottom was untouched and the patty was missing a little from one side but was mostly still there. The other burger that I had taken the bite from was out of the wrapper, untouched and back in the bag, the wrapper was wadded into a ball and had been placed back in the bag. Again, no tooth or claw marks visible on the burger or the wadded up wrapper. The recording sounds like something roughing up the mic andmoving the downed fence next to the recorder, then it sounds like the paper bag and wrapper. I guess it could have been a person, but I don't think any animal could have done this without leaving teethmarks. IMO BTW, I believe the call to be a Blue Heron. |
